Taking Steps Against Conflict Minerals (Motorola Solutions)

Motorola Solutions’ position is that minerals that support conflict are unacceptable. To that end, we are supporting efforts to create the needed transparency in our supply chain so that we can source responsibly. These include three areas of focus: mine to smelter, the smelter itself, and from smelter to end use.

Motorola Solutions supports the efforts of the iTSCi traceability program, the Conflict-Free Smelter (CFS) Program and the conflict minerals reporting template. These programs are just beginning to get off the ground and will need continuous improvement. In addition, to help out the displaced artisanal miners affected by the de facto ban in the DRC and to help exercise these new systems, Motorola Solutions has partnered with a tantalum capacitor manufacturer to create the Solutions for Hope Project, a tightly controlled, closed-pipe supply line that sources tantalum from a validated conflict-free mine in the DRC. This pipeline has only five actors: the mining co-op, the mine concessions holder, the smelter, the component manufacturer and end users. The Solutions for Hope Project supports the ongoing sourcing of legitimate minerals from the DRC.
